The African Democratic Congress has declared that it can win the 2027 general elections without forming a broad opposition coalition.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Abdullahi explained that the ADC initially considered building a broad coalition of opposition parties to strengthen its chances of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress and President Bola Tinubu.
He, however, said the political calculations had changed following the departure of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
According to him, the ADC is now more focused on strategic cooperation with other opposition parties rather than pursuing a single presidential candidate.
He said, “The ADC doesn’t need a coalition to win this 2027 election. When we started building this coalition, we started on the assumption that if we were able to build a broad-based coalition, it would make our job of beating the APC easier.
“If we are able to build the kind of coalition that we started, maybe to make our job easier, then we don’t need that coalition to win the election.”
The ADC spokesman disclosed that discussions were still ongoing among opposition parties, particularly on areas where they could work together ahead of the election.
He noted that the emerging cooperation was aimed at strengthening election monitoring and protecting votes, rather than producing a consensus presidential candidate.
Abdullahi added that initiatives such as the G-100 mobilisation effort were still seeking to bring opposition groups together, stressing that a common strategy for monitoring elections and safeguarding votes could significantly improve the opposition’s chances.
