Academic and non-academic staff of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, have begun receiving salary alerts following the release of a ₦1.1 billion intervention fund approved by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to clear outstanding salary arrears.
The development comes barely hours after concerns emerged that the intervention fund had yet to hit the university's account despite the governor's approval, leaving workers, who had gone three months without pay, uncertain over when payment would commence.
Governor Aiyedatiwa had, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, announced the release of the intervention fund to offset outstanding salaries and facilitate the resolution of the industrial dispute that has paralysed academic activities at the institution.
The governor also directed the Ministry of Finance and the university management to ensure the immediate disbursement of the funds while urging the institution's labour unions to suspend the ongoing strike and return to work in the interest of students.
Findings on Monday evening indicated that the payment process had commenced, with several members of staff confirming receipt of salary alerts.
"I received my salary alert today," a staff member, who pleaded not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, told our correspondent.
Another employee, who identified himself simply as Ade, said, "I have received the alert. We give glory to God."
The university's Head of Media and Protocol, Mr. Sola Imoru, also confirmed that staff had started receiving their salaries, signalling the commencement of the disbursement of the intervention fund.
