The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof. Tomola Obamuyi, has commended the Ondo State Governor and Visitor to the institution, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for increasing the university’s subvention by 60 per cent and approving the implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and university-based unions.
The approvals were announced on Monday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, as part of measures aimed at addressing challenges confronting the state-owned tertiary institutions.
Reacting to the development, Obamuyi described the interventions as timely, saying they would help restore stability to the university, protect the academic calendar and prevent further disruption of academic activities.
The VC said the latest measures were particularly significant coming shortly after the governor approved a N1.1bn bailout for the university.
He said, “This announcement is heartwarming. Coming just two weeks after the governor approved N1.1bn bailout for our university, it demonstrates that the governor is attentive to the concerns of the university community and committed to the welfare of staff and students.
“With these interventions, we can all heave a sigh of relief. They will bring the ongoing strike by academic staff to an end and also prevent the proposed industrial action by other unions.”
Obamuyi said the increased subventions, which would benefit all state-owned tertiary institutions, further demonstrated the administration’s commitment to the education sector.
He assured the governor that the additional funds would be deployed responsibly and in the best interest of the institution.
According to him, the interventions would also boost staff morale and enhance academic and administrative productivity across the university.
