Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Friday disbursed N49m to 43 residents to assist with the payment of their medical bills, reaffirming his administration's commitment to improving access to healthcare.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, presented the financial assistance to the beneficiaries in Akure, the state capital.
Ajaka said the intervention recorded an increase from the previous year, noting that 33 residents benefited from N39m in 2025, while this year's exercise saw 43 beneficiaries receive N49m.
He explained that the programme was designed to support residents facing serious health challenges and was implemented without political, religious or ethnic considerations.
"This intervention is purely humanitarian. It is aimed at saving lives, and beneficiaries are selected through a transparent process. Applicants must present a doctor's report, medical diagnosis and treatment estimate before their cases are reviewed by a medical inquiry board," he said.
The commissioner urged beneficiaries to ensure that the funds were used strictly for their medical treatment to achieve the intended purpose.
Ajaka also encouraged residents to enrol in the Ondo State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, describing it as a more sustainable means of accessing quality healthcare.
"Health insurance remains the best option because this kind of medical assistance cannot cater for everyone indefinitely. Once you are enrolled, your healthcare needs can be managed more sustainably," he added.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Elder Henry Ojagbonmi and Mrs Iyabode Bolajoko expressed appreciation to the state government for the support, saying the intervention would ease their financial burden and improve their chances of recovery. They pledged to use the funds solely for their medical care.
