A staff member of the Works Department of Akoko South-East Local Government, Mr Towolawi Joel B., has emerged the winner of a brand-new car in a raffle organised as part of the 2026 Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees Week celebration in Ondo State.
The three-day event, held in Owo, featured the raffle as one of its major highlights, with the initiative aimed at promoting workers’ welfare, encouraging participation and boosting morale among local government employees.
Towolawi was among three workers who won prizes at the draw. Mrs Adenle Ronke of Odigbo Local Government won a motorcycle, while Mr Olafusi Ilemobayo of Irele Local Government emerged winner of a deep freezer.
Speaking at the event, the Ondo State NULGE President, Comrade Fredrick Akinrinlola, highlighted the achievements recorded by his administration in the past two and a half years.
Akinrinlola attributed the successes to the support of union members across the 18 local government areas and four allied boards, as well as the cooperation of the state government and other stakeholders.
He particularly commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for what he described as his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of local government employees.
According to him, the administration has facilitated regular staff promotions, provided official vehicles for principal officers and supported local and international training programmes aimed at improving workers’ skills and professional capacity.
Akinrinlola also disclosed that outstanding leave bonus payments had been cleared, while arrangements had been made for the payment of the 2026 leave bonus.
He described the approval and consolidation of Grade Level 17 for Heads of Local Government Administration as one of the major achievements recorded during his tenure, saying it would strengthen career progression and improve recognition for senior officers in the local government service.
The NULGE president further disclosed that staff buses had been provided for the union’s 22 branches across the state to improve workers’ mobility and operational efficiency.
He said the union had also organised capacity-building seminars for Directors serving as Heads of Department, while salaries of local government health workers were reviewed upwards in recognition of their role in the primary healthcare system.
According to him, cameras and other communication equipment had also been supplied to Information Officers to improve documentation, publicity and information management across the local governments.
Akinrinlola listed the chartering of the Ondo State Local Government Staff Training School branch and the election of its pioneer executive committee as another milestone achieved by the union.
He added that the union facilitated the implementation of career elongation for Executive Officers, Technical Officers and Confidential Secretaries who hold university degrees, describing the policy as a development that had created additional career opportunities for affected workers.
The NULGE president stressed that the achievements were products of cooperation between the union, government and other stakeholders.
He specifically appreciated the Governor’s Special Adviser on Special Duties and Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo, for his accessibility and support in strengthening relations between the government and organised labour.
Akinrinlola also commended the Ondo State Local Government Service Commission, led by its Permanent Secretary and Acting Chairman, Prof Bayo Ilawole, for its cooperation on issues affecting workers’ welfare and career development.
He acknowledged the contributions of local government chairmen, union leaders, members of the State Administrative Council and branch executives to the stability and development of the local government system.
Responding on behalf of the governor, Taiwo praised NULGE for maintaining what he described as a peaceful and constructive relationship with the government.
He also commended Akinrinlola for what he described as effective leadership and his efforts in presenting the concerns of local government workers to the government.
Similarly, Ilawole described the Grade Level 17 consolidation for Heads of Local Government Administration as a significant achievement, saying it would further strengthen the local government service.
A former National President of NULGE, Dr Deji Akinwalere, also applauded the transformation of the union in Ondo State, attributing the development to purposeful leadership.
The event attracted government officials, union leaders and other stakeholders, including Dr Olubunmi Eniayewu, Dr I.D. Fashina, the Administrative Secretary of the Local Government Staff Pension Transitional Department, Dr Tunde Monehin, and the Executive Chairmen of Ilaje and Owo Local Government Areas.
