The wife of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Osun State, Dr Sekinat Oyebamiji, narrowly escaped injury on Sunday after suspected political thugs attacked her convoy in Ede South Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly happened shortly after Dr Oyebamiji and Princess Bukola Adereti, wife of the party's deputy governorship candidate, Kayode Adereti, concluded a voter mobilisation exercise in Alajue Ward 2 ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Eyewitnesses said the convoy was ambushed at about 7 p.m. by a group of armed hoodlums as it departed the venue of the political engagement.
Although the APC governorship candidate's wife and Princess Adereti escaped without injuries, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Sekona Branch, was said to have suffered a serious head injury during the attack.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Ede South Local Government, Kolawole Salami, described the attack as condemnable and called for an immediate investigation by security agencies.
Salami said the assault occurred along the Alajue-Sekona Garage route while members of the APC team were returning from the campaign-related programme.
He alleged that those behind the attack were supporters of the Accord Party and urged the police and other security agencies to ensure everyone involved was apprehended and prosecuted.
He stressed that those responsible should be made to face the full weight of the law to prevent a recurrence of such violence.
As of the time of filing this report, Dr Oyebamiji had yet to respond to requests for comments on the incident.
