Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over an unexplained credit paid into one of his private bank accounts, warning that the incident could indicate a breach of confidential banking information.
Atiku disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, saying the payment came from an unidentified individual with the narration, "Contribution Electioneering Campaign."
According to the statement, neither the former vice president nor his campaign authorised, requested or had prior knowledge of the transaction, describing the development as suspicious.
The statement further noted that the account involved is a strictly private one whose details are not available in the public domain, raising concerns about how unknown persons gained access to the confidential banking information.
Atiku warned that if the banking details of a former vice president and presidential candidate could be accessed without authorisation, the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk.
He also expressed fears that the information might have been obtained by individuals with privileged access, describing such a possibility as a serious abuse capable of exposing account holders to security threats, including kidnapping, fraud and other criminal activities.
The former vice president said security agencies had been notified of the development, which he described as one of several suspicious incidents unfolding ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he called attempts to tarnish his image, insisting that he remained committed to offering credible leadership and practical solutions to the country's challenges.
