The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the decision in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and the diaspora, urging them to use the occasion to reflect on the values of compassion, humility and service associated with the life and teachings of the Prophet.
He said the significance of Eid ul Mawlid extended beyond religious observance, stressing the need for Nigerians to embrace values that could promote peaceful coexistence and national development.
According to him, the occasion should encourage citizens to reflect on the importance of kindness, humility and service to others, which he described as values Nigeria needs at this time.
The minister also urged Nigerians to pray for peace, unity and stability in the country, noting that the responsibility for sustaining national cohesion rested on all citizens.
He advised Muslim faithful and other Nigerians celebrating the holiday to do so peacefully and with mutual respect.
Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property while working to strengthen peace and security across the country.
The minister wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
