CAN declares three-day fasting, prayer for 78 abducted schoolchildren

The Christian Association of Nigeria, Borno State chapter, has called on Christians across the state to embark on a three-day fasting and prayer session for the release of 78 schoolchildren held captive by Boko Haram terrorists.

The victims were reportedly abducted in Askira-Uba Local Government Area and have spent more than two months in captivity.

The association said the spiritual exercise would also cover other kidnapping victims from Ngoshe in Gwoza Local Government Area, as well as those abducted along the Biu-Buratai Road while travelling to Maiduguri.

The prayer programme will run from Friday, August 14, through Sunday, August 16, 2026, under the theme, “A Call for Three Days Fasting and Prayers for the Safe Return of Our Kidnapped Brethren.”

The Borno CAN Secretary, Senior Apostle Joshua Akeredolu Michael, announced the directive in a statement, saying the initiative was approved by the state leadership headed by Most Rev. Dr John Bogna Bakeni.

He said the exercise was intended to unite Christians in seeking divine intervention for the victims and their families as efforts continue to secure their freedom.

Akeredolu appealed to pastors and church leaders to ensure their members participate fully in the fasting and prayer exercise.

He said individual churches were expected to organise the programme within their congregations and bring it to a close during their Sunday services.

The association also urged the Federal Government, the Borno State Government and security agencies to intensify coordinated operations aimed at rescuing the abducted schoolchildren and other victims still being held.

CAN said it remained hopeful that the intervention of the authorities, combined with prayers from Christians across the state, would result in the safe recovery of the victims.

The association also expressed solidarity with the affected families, assuring them that efforts to secure the freedom of their loved ones should remain a priority.
