An eight-month pregnant woman, Harira Aliyu, has approached a Shari’a Court in Rigasa, Kaduna State, seeking an order directing her former husband, Nasiru Al-Hassan, to provide financial support for her and their unborn child.
Aliyu also asked the court to formally recognise a divorce pronouncement allegedly made by Al-Hassan in March.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the petitioner told the court that her former husband had only supported her financially for two months since their separation.
She said the assistance had stopped despite her pregnancy, leaving her in need of continued financial support as she prepares to give birth.
“I am eight months pregnant. Since our divorce in March, he has only sent money for two months to cater for me and our unborn child,” she told the court.
Aliyu urged the court to compel Al-Hassan to continue providing for her until she delivers, saying she was expected to give birth in about a month.
Responding through his counsel, Abubakar Sani, the defendant said he had only recently been briefed about the matter.
He therefore asked the court for more time to study the petition and prepare his response.
The presiding judge, Malam Mukhtar Aliyu, subsequently adjourned the case to another date for further proceedings.
