Gunmen have killed an 85-year-old community leader, Reuben Owie, at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhunhun, in Benin City, Edo State.
Owie, who served as the secretary of Iyowa community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state, was reportedly attacked by two unidentified armed men.
The incident occurred around 8:15pm on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the deceased’s residence on Abu Street, off Okhunhun Road.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Saturday through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem.
According to the police spokesperson, the victim’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, reported the attack to the command after the gunmen invaded the residence.
Ikoedem said one of the attackers allegedly shot the elderly man in the head before the assailants fled the scene.
She added that police officers were immediately deployed to the area, where they documented the incident and recovered the victim’s remains.
The remains were subsequently deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital mortuary, while detectives commenced an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
