At least 20 people have been killed after suspected gunmen invaded Binper community in the Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attackers reportedly stormed the community around midnight and continued their assault into the early hours of Tuesday, moving from one house to another and attacking residents who were asleep.
The latest incident occurred barely a week after three people were killed in the area amid escalating tension between Fulani and Mwaghavul communities, which had traded allegations of arson.
National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, said the attackers arrived in large numbers and were armed with sophisticated weapons.
According to him, the assailants forced their way into homes and attacked residents without warning.
“The attackers in their numbers and with sophisticated weapons, moved from house to house, forcing their way in and attacking residents in their sleep,” Dabit said.
He said more than 20 people had been confirmed dead as of Tuesday morning, while several others sustained injuries. Dabit added that some residents were still unaccounted for following the attack.
The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident but said he could not immediately provide further details, noting that security personnel were still operating in the affected community and assessing the situation.
