A former councillor in Plateau State, Daniel Danjuma Chong, has been shot dead after armed men attacked Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of the state.
Chong, widely known as "Hon. Star," previously represented Rim Ward in the Riyom Legislative Council before leaving office.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association confirmed the killing on Monday, saying the attack occurred around 10:45pm on Sunday when gunmen stormed Torok village in Rim community.
In a statement by its spokesperson, Rwang Tengwong, the association said the assailants opened fire indiscriminately, killing the former councillor during the invasion.
The group also disclosed that another resident, David Dachollom Danjuma, suffered a fatal gunshot injury before the attackers escaped.
While condemning the incident, the association alleged that the gunmen came from the Kess axis, popularly referred to as Bangai-Fulani, and described the latest violence as disturbing.
It urged security agencies and the Plateau State Government to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
"The persistent attacks and killing of innocent citizens cannot be allowed to continue. We call on the relevant authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and made to face the full weight of the law," the statement read.
The association also extended its condolences to the bereaved family and residents of Torok community, calling for improved security across vulnerable communities in Riyom.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the command's spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, did not respond to enquiries before press time.
