A father of two, Aminu Kabiru, has told a Shari’a Court in Kaduna State that his strong affection for his wife affected his ability to concentrate on his job and provide adequately for his family.
Kabiru made the disclosure while responding to a divorce application filed by his estranged wife through Khul’i proceedings before the court in Kaduna.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the man appealed to the court to give him more time to reconcile with his wife, insisting that their marriage could still be saved, particularly for the sake of their two young children.
Kabiru said his emotional attachment to his wife had become so intense that it distracted him from work and affected his ability to earn enough to meet the family’s needs.
“I could not provide enough for my family because of the intense love I have for my wife,” he told the court.
The couple, who married in 2024, have two children, aged 16 months and two months, according to the woman’s lawyer, Abubakar Jibril.
Jibril told the court that his client had been staying at her parents’ residence for about eight months because, according to her, she had not been receiving adequate care or financial support from her husband.
The lawyer said the woman had made up her mind to end the marriage and was prepared to return the N100,000 dowry paid to her.
“The complainant is no longer interested in the marriage and is ready to return the dowry she received,” Jibril said.
Kabiru, however, appealed for another opportunity to resolve the differences between them, urging the court to consider the welfare of their two children.
During the proceedings, the presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiya Shehu, asked the husband to clarify the amount of dowry involved.
Kabiru confirmed that N100,000 was the agreed dowry but argued that he had spent considerably more money on his wife before their wedding.
He therefore asked that the expenses he claimed to have incurred before the marriage be taken into account.
The judge subsequently adjourned the case to enable Kabiru to present details of the expenses he said he incurred, after which the court will continue its consideration of the divorce application.
