A 32-year-old man, Abiodun Edward, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate’s Court over allegations of stealing a mobile phone and fraudulently transferring N600,000 from the owner’s bank account.
Edward was brought before the Oke-Eda Magistrate’s Court on two counts bordering on extortion and stealing.
The prosecutor, Olusegun Akeredolu, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences on July 26, 2026, at about 1 p.m. on Odo Agbara Street in Owo, Ondo State.
According to the prosecution, Edward allegedly forcefully took a mobile phone belonging to one Johnson Gbemi Promise and demanded a ransom of N50,000 before returning the device.
The prosecution further alleged that the defendant used the victim’s phone to transfer N600,000 from his First Bank account without his knowledge or authorisation.
The offences, the prosecutor said, contravene Sections 406 and 383 and are punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel, Torkuma Peter Orsootyo, prayed the court for an adjournment to enable the defence prepare for trial.
Chief Magistrate Damilola Sekoni admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like amount, directing that the residential addresses of the sureties be verified. The case was adjourned until October 12, 2026, for trial.
