Man fetches petrol from motorcycle, sets wife ablaze

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, Jacob Irewa, for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire following a domestic dispute in Lokoja.

The incident occurred on Friday at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja, after an argument reportedly broke out between the couple over the victim’s decision to burn some of her husband’s clothes.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, said the suspect allegedly became angry, threatened his wife and later obtained petrol from his motorcycle before setting her on fire.

She said the police surveillance team from the B Division, Felele, responded to a report of the incident and arrested Irewa at the scene.

According to the PPRO, the victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele, while the suspect reportedly admitted during questioning that he set his wife ablaze. The police said investigation was ongoing and that Irewa would be prosecuted after the conclusion of the probe.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and warned residents against resorting to violence in resolving domestic disagreements. 

He urged members of the public to seek lawful means of settling disputes, stressing that the command would ensure that anyone found responsible for violent offences faced justice.
