As the 2027 Ondo North Senatorial election draws closer, the contest is increasingly becoming a debate about the quality of representation the people of the district want and the kind of leadership capable of translating a Senate mandate into tangible benefits.
At the centre of that conversation is Prince Foluso Mayowa Adefemi, popularly known as FMA, the African Democratic Congress senatorial candidate for Ondo North, who is campaigning on a promise of people-focused and result-oriented representation.
For Adefemi, the Senate seat should go beyond legislation and political visibility.
He believes constituents should be able to point to meaningful interventions, opportunities and policies resulting from the mandate they gave their representative.
His argument for a new direction is also anchored in his record of philanthropy. Before entering the political arena, Adefemi had supported students, youths, families and other members of his community through various initiatives, using his personal resources to provide assistance where necessary.
Rather than relying solely on philanthropy, however, he is proposing a structured approach that would use the influence of the Senate to attract federal programmes, projects and economic opportunities to Ondo North.
Education, youth empowerment and job creation are expected to occupy prominent positions in his proposed agenda. He wants greater access to scholarships, vocational training, entrepreneurship support, apprenticeships and other programmes that can equip young people with skills for sustainable livelihoods
Adefemi also plans to push for interventions in agriculture, small businesses and enterprise development, drawing from his experience in business, including the maritime sector. He believes farmers, traders, artisans and entrepreneurs in the district should have improved access to federal support and funding opportunities.
Healthcare and infrastructure are equally central to his proposition. His agenda includes advocating improved primary healthcare, medical interventions, roads, electricity, water and other basic amenities capable of stimulating economic activity and improving living conditions across the district.
The ADC candidate is also placing emphasis on accountability and regular engagement with constituents. He argues that representation should not end after an election, insisting that the people deserve to know the projects pursued, interventions attracted and legislative positions taken on their behalf.
Sports development also forms part of his proposed youth-focused agenda. With his experience in sports administration, including gymnastics, Adefemi believes the sector can be harnessed to discover talents, create employment opportunities and expose young people to national and international opportunities.
His campaign comes amid criticism from some constituents over what they regard as inadequate visible impact from the current representation. Adefemi, however, is seeking to make the 2027 contest less about personalities and more about what he describes as a fresh development agenda for Ondo North.
The proposed agenda covers education, healthcare, employment, youth empowerment, agriculture, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, sports and stronger access to federal opportunities.
For Adefemi, the central question before voters is whether the next senator should merely occupy the seat or actively use the office to attract development and opportunities to the district.
As Ondo North approaches another electoral cycle, FMA is asking constituents to weigh his record of service against his proposed plans, with his campaign arguing that the district deserves representation that is accessible, accountable and capable of delivering practical results.
