The wife of popular Delta-based social media personality, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, better known as Odogwu Asaba, has acknowledged that her husband was romantically involved with 20-year-old Favour Agbro, while strongly rejecting claims that he raped her.
She spoke in a video posted on Ogbonna’s social media account on Wednesday, saying she had decided to address the controversy after closely following developments surrounding the case.
According to her, the allegations against her husband had been distorted on social media, insisting that she would continue to support him while the matter was being investigated.
Ogbonna, 40, was taken into custody by the Delta State Police Command after Favour allegedly accused him of sexual assault before her death following the ingestion of a toxic substance.
The police had said preliminary investigations indicated that Ogbonna invited Favour to Asaba, purportedly to teach her how to develop and monetise her social media platforms. The command alleged that he later took her to a hotel, where she was reportedly sexually assaulted and beaten.
But his wife gave a different account, maintaining that the encounter between Ogbonna and Favour was an affair rather than rape.
She said, “Odogwu Asaba did not kill anybody. I know my husband. He did not rape Favour. What happened was that he had an affair with the girl.”
The woman, who said she had been married to Ogbonna for eight years and had four children with him, urged members of the public to allow investigators and the courts to establish the facts instead of relying on social media narratives.
She said the death of Favour made the situation particularly sensitive, adding that her husband would have the opportunity to present his own version of events as the investigation progresses.
The police had earlier said Favour returned home after her alleged encounter with Ogbonna and informed her parents about what she claimed happened. She also reportedly recorded a video about the incident before ingesting a poisonous substance and later dying while receiving treatment.
The command said the investigation was triggered by a petition from Favour’s family and that Ogbonna was expected to face prosecution. He has not been found guilty of any offence, while the allegations against him remain under investigation.
