The Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr Matthew Olumide Adepoju, has attained another career milestone with his conferment as Professor of Geoinformatics and Geographic Information Systems Applications by the African University of Science and Technology.
The academic honour was formally presented to Adepoju by the President of AUST, Prof Azikiwe Onwualu, at the university’s campus in Abuja.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director of Media and Corporate Communications, NASRDA, Dr Felix Ale, who said the conferment recognised Adepoju’s contributions to geoinformatics and Geographic Information Systems.
According to the statement, the new professor has also distinguished himself through efforts aimed at advancing science, technology and innovation, particularly in Nigeria and across Africa.
Speaking after receiving the conferment, Adepoju expressed gratitude to the management and governing board of AUST for the confidence reposed in him, noting that the rigorous assessment process that preceded the appointment had reinforced the credibility of the academic recognition.
He also stressed the importance of mentorship in developing young professionals, saying such programmes could expose them to international opportunities, expand their professional networks and enable them to transfer valuable knowledge to Nigeria.
Describing the achievement as “a journey of a lifetime,” Adepoju acknowledged the support of his family throughout his career and dedicated the milestone to their sacrifices and encouragement.
He pledged to contribute to the university through teaching, mentorship and supervision of students, while also promising to uphold the values of the institution and serve as a worthy ambassador.
Onwualu, in his remarks, commended Adepoju for his longstanding contribution to capacity development, particularly his role in training young Africans in GIS. He disclosed that Adepoju was among two candidates who successfully emerged from the university’s professorial assessment process.
The AUST president further noted that the university maintains academic programmes with NASRDA as part of its space-related initiatives, expressing optimism that the partnership would continue to strengthen manpower development and advance space science and technology in the country.
The conferment adds to Adepoju’s years of work in academia, professional development and space science, with the NASRDA boss later celebrating the achievement with members of his family, friends, associates and senior officials of the agency.
