A newborn baby girl has been found alive in a forest in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, days after she was allegedly abandoned shortly after birth.
The infant was reportedly discovered on Saturday at Ashar forest in Wuese community by a resident, Mrs Mbakasev Yisa, who was said to have heard movement and signs of life from a carton.
The baby was reportedly wrapped in clothing and placed inside the carton. Witnesses said she appeared to have been in the forest for about three days, with maggots allegedly found on her body and a strong odour coming from the container.
A community councillor, Terkumbur Gabriel Mbaukaan, who confirmed the incident, said the child was in a critical condition when she was brought out of the forest.
Yisa reportedly alerted a nearby police outpost after discovering the infant. Police officers were said to have visited the location, recorded details of the incident and advised that the baby be taken for urgent medical attention.
Mbaukaan said attempts to secure treatment at an initial clinic were unsuccessful because of the severity of the baby's condition. She was subsequently taken to Dooshima Clinic in Wuese, where she was admitted for treatment.
The Wuese community youth leader, Udigi Waya, also confirmed the rescue, saying the circumstances suggested that the child could have remained in the forest for roughly three days before being found.
However, the Benue State Police Command said it had not received any formal report concerning the incident.
Its spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, said he contacted the Divisional Police Officer in Konshisha, who reportedly told him that he was unaware of the case.
