Confusion has surrounded the condition of Katsina United defender, Ozor Chinedu, after the 18-year-old footballer, who was reportedly pronounced dead following a collapse during a pre-season match, was later found to be alive at a mortuary.
Chinedu reportedly collapsed during Katsina United’s pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina, on Tuesday.
The defender, who recently joined Katsina United from Kano Pillars, was said to have slumped while featuring in the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Cup and was subsequently rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital for treatment.
He was reportedly pronounced dead at the hospital, prompting Katsina United to issue a condolence message over the player’s purported death.
Other clubs, including Heartland FC and Kano Pillars, also mourned Chinedu in separate social media posts.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn when staff at Katsina General Hospital’s mortuary reportedly noticed movement from the footballer’s body.
He was immediately taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, where he was placed on oxygen and is currently receiving treatment.
The media officer of Katsina United, Nasir Gide, confirmed the development, saying Chinedu had been declared dead twice before signs of life were later detected.
Heartland FC, where the player previously featured, also acknowledged the development and appealed to supporters to pray for his recovery.
As of Wednesday morning, Chinedu was said to be in critical condition at Katsina General Hospital, with the football community awaiting further medical updates on his condition.
