A Nigerian woman has been arrested in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, after police allegedly found her in possession of cocaine worth about N40.9m.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Joy, a Lagos resident, was apprehended by officers of the Chandan Nagar Police near IT Park, Sinhasa, according to a report by News18 Hindi.
Police reportedly became suspicious of Joy while conducting heightened patrols ahead of the Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami festivities. She was said to have been carrying a black bag at the time.
The officers reportedly questioned her after stopping her, but allegedly became dissatisfied with her responses before searching the bag in the presence of female officers.
The search allegedly uncovered 57.18 grammes of cocaine concealed inside a transparent packet.
The seized substance was estimated by the police to be worth more than Rs29 lakh, equivalent to about N40.9m.
Investigators said Joy had travelled from Mumbai to Indore allegedly to deliver the cocaine. She reportedly told detectives that she bought the substance cheaply and intended to sell it at a higher price.
The report said Joy entered India from Nigeria on August 14 with a seven-month business visa and had been staying in Bandra East, Mumbai, where she reportedly worked at a hair salon with her sister.
Authorities have opened a case against her under Sections 8 and 21 of India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
She was subsequently arraigned and remanded in custody, while investigators examine her phone, immigration records and other digital evidence to determine the alleged recipients of the cocaine and whether more people are connected to the suspected drug network.
