The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has donated ₦100 million and a brand-new Hilux vehicle to support the operations of the Iru Ekun Security Network, a community security outfit established by Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
The monarch announced the donation on Tuesday at his palace in Ile-Ife while receiving Igboho and members of the security outfit during a courtesy visit. The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the palace's Senior Media Officer, Sodiq Lawal, on behalf of the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare.
The Ooni described the Iru Ekun Security Network as a timely initiative aimed at complementing existing security efforts to protect lives and property across Yorubaland. He said community-driven security had become increasingly important in addressing growing security concerns.
He also praised Igboho for what he described as his courage, resilience and commitment to the welfare of the Yoruba people, stressing that genuine leadership is reflected in selfless service and meaningful contributions to society.
According to the monarch, every Yoruba son and daughter has a responsibility to promote peace, unity and development in the region, noting that security remains the bedrock of sustainable growth.
He said the donation was intended to strengthen efforts geared towards protecting communities and fostering peaceful coexistence.
"I commend Chief Sunday Igboho for taking this bold step to strengthen community security. Protecting our people is a shared responsibility that goes beyond political, religious or ideological differences. Every genuine effort aimed at preserving lives and maintaining peace deserves support," the Ooni said.
The traditional ruler also called on Yoruba traditional rulers, business leaders, professionals and other stakeholders at home and abroad to support the security initiative, adding that unity remained the greatest strength of the Yoruba race.
In his response, Igboho expressed appreciation to the Ooni for the financial support and encouragement, describing the monarch as a unifying figure whose leadership had continued to inspire Yoruba people across the world.
He said the visit was also to brief the Ooni on the progress of the Iru Ekun Security Network and seek his continued guidance and royal blessings for its operations.
Igboho further revealed plans to convene a security summit involving traditional rulers from across Yorubaland to discuss practical measures for tackling insecurity in the region. He said the proposed summit, subject to the Ooni's approval, would be held at the Ooni's Palace in Ile-Ife.
He assured that the Iru Ekun Security Network would continue to operate within the law while working with relevant authorities and local communities to promote intelligence gathering, community policing and lasting peace.
