The Osun State Police Command has taken 10 suspects into custody over two separate incidents involving alleged violent crimes in Modakeke and an attack at the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
The arrests were made as security agencies stepped up operations across the state ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
Four of the suspects were picked up in Modakeke, Ife East Local Government Area, in connection with allegations of attempted murder, conspiracy, assault occasioning harm and illegal possession of firearms.
The suspects are Olufemi Olatunji, 39; Ajayi Idowu, 31; Akingbala Oluwakemi, 40; and Adekunle Basirat, 40.
They were arrested around 2am on August 9 after the police received a petition concerning the alleged offences.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Wednesday.
Police operatives who searched the suspects’ homes and premises recovered two firearms, including a locally manufactured cut-to-size gun and a pump-action firearm.
The command said the locally produced weapon was found at Basirat’s shop, while the pump-action gun was recovered from Oluwakemi’s residence.
The police also disclosed that Basirat is the wife of Solomon Akinlabi, popularly called “Indomine”, while Oluwakemi is married to Akingbala Akindele, alias “Ostand”.
The four suspects, according to the command, are being interrogated as investigators work to establish their alleged involvement in the incident.
Meanwhile, six other suspects were arrested following reports of an attack on the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
The arrests were carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit after armed hoodlums allegedly invaded the institution, during which two students were reportedly injured.
The suspects were identified as Ajoba Akorede, 27; Adam Oseni, 27; Ogunrinde Ayomide, 21; Ogunlana Muheez, 26; Ajose Noah, 25; and Adeniyi Damola, 25.
The police said Akorede and Oseni admitted during interrogation to being members of the Aye confraternity. However, the command said it had not established whether the two were students of the institution.
Ojelabi said investigations into the two cases were continuing, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted upon completion of the investigations.
He added that police operatives were still searching for other individuals allegedly involved in the Modakeke incident.
