Tension briefly gripped a polling unit in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Saturday after a confrontation broke out among supporters during the ongoing governorship election.
The incident occurred at the polling unit of the state’s Deputy Governor and Accord Party deputy governorship candidate, Prince Kola Adewusi, following the arrival of the All Progressives Congress deputy governorship candidate, Benjamin Kayode Adereti.
Adereti had reportedly voted earlier at his designated polling centre, Waasin Polling Unit 11, Ilaare Ward 3, before heading to Adewusi’s polling location.
His arrival was said to have triggered resistance from some of Adewusi’s supporters, leading to a heated exchange and physical confrontation.
The disagreement temporarily disrupted voting activities as supporters traded words and tension rose within the polling area.
The cause of Adereti’s visit to the deputy governor’s polling unit was not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
Although the situation reportedly lasted briefly, the confrontation unsettled voters and supporters at the polling location.
The incident came amid generally peaceful voting in several parts of the state, with voters turning out to participate in the governorship election.
No immediate report of serious injury or arrest had emerged in connection with the confrontation as of press time.
