Osun poll, pointer to APC defeat in 2027 – Atiku

Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, describing the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election as a pointer to what Nigerians should expect in the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, in a statement issued by his media office on Sunday, also commended Osun voters for turning out in large numbers and, according to him, resisting attempts to undermine the electoral process.

He said the result reflected the choice of the electorate, adding that the election had demonstrated the importance of citizens defending their votes against electoral malpractice.

Atiku said, “The lesson from the election is that the voters in Osun State have set a good example of how we must come out in large numbers in the general elections next year.”

He further argued that the Osun election showed that a determined electorate could frustrate vote-buying, rigging and other irregularities by protecting their votes.

The former Vice-President also criticised the presence of security personnel during the election, alleging that it was intended to intimidate voters.

He claimed that despite what he described as “state-sponsored intimidation,” the electorate voted against the ruling All Progressives Congress and its policies under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Atiku said, “Nigerians have roundly rejected the APC. The election in Osun State is just a telling indication that the APC will be defeated in the general election in January 2027. Indeed, it is a forerunner of the 2027 general elections.”

He commended Adeleke for mobilising voters and urged him to use his renewed mandate to deepen good governance and improve the economic and social wellbeing of Osun residents.

Atiku added, “While we congratulate Governor Adeleke for his victory at the polls, I wish to urge him to continue with the process of good governance that has earned him the affection of the people and to make Osun State a shining success that the country will be proud of.”

He concluded by describing Adeleke’s re-election as an opportunity for the governor to consolidate his achievements and deliver greater prosperity to the people of the state.
