Suspected food poisoning kills four Almajiris

Four pupils of a Qur’anic school in Kano State have reportedly died after consuming food suspected to have been contaminated.

The incident occurred in Ungoggo Local Government Area of the state, where the victims were pupils of the Qur’anic school operated by Malam Iliyasu Mai Tsangaya in Kadage Sharifai.

The National Chairman of the Tsangaya Media Network, Alaramma Sani Musa Nuhu, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday.

According to him, the affected pupils became ill after eating the suspected contaminated food and were subsequently taken to the Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The statement said the pupils later died while receiving medical attention at the hospital on Sunday night, August 16, 2026.

It stated that the exact type of food consumed by the pupils and the substance believed to have caused the suspected poisoning had not been established.

Following the deaths, the remains of the victims were reportedly released for burial after approval was obtained from the District Head, known as the Dagaci, and the Divisional Police Officer.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

The Kano State Police Command had also not issued an official statement on the reported deaths as of Monday.
