President Bola Tinubu has approved the absorption of 3,252 verified Parent-Teacher Association teachers into the Federal Civil Service, paving the way for their regularisation in Federal Unity Colleges across the country.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Thursday, describing the approval as a major step towards addressing the shortage of teachers in federal secondary schools and strengthening the nation's education system.
Alausa said the beneficiaries emerged from a nationwide verification exercise conducted by an inter-ministerial committee, which screened PTA teachers serving in Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges.
According to the minister, the successful candidates comprise Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors, adding that they will be formally absorbed into the Federal Civil Service after completing all required statutory procedures.
He said the decision reflects the President's commitment to improving the quality of education by expanding the teaching workforce and rewarding dedicated educators who have served the system for years.
Alausa noted that many of the verified PTA teachers had spent close to 25 years supporting teaching and learning in federal schools despite lacking permanent appointments.
He explained that their regularisation would not only recognise their years of service but also preserve valuable experience within the education sector, improve classroom delivery and enhance students' learning outcomes.
The minister described the approval as one of the Federal Government's most significant interventions in tackling the longstanding shortage of teachers in Federal Unity Colleges, adding that it aligns with the administration's broader education reform agenda under the Renewed Hope initiative.
He assured that the Ministry of Education would collaborate with relevant government agencies to conclude the remaining administrative processes required for the issuance of formal appointment letters in line with public service regulations.
Alausa expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the exercise, saying the decision underscored the administration's resolve to prioritise education as a key driver of national development.
He also pledged that the regularisation exercise would be implemented transparently and in accordance with due process, while reaffirming the ministry's commitment to policies that strengthen the teaching profession and improve learning standards in Federal Unity Colleges nationwide.
