The family of a Nigerian living in the United Kingdom, Nwachi Nwokorie, has been thrown into mourning following his sudden death on August 4.
Nwokorie, who was a father of a six-month-old child, reportedly died unexpectedly, leaving behind his wife, Emmanuella Offor, and their infant.
The widow has now appealed to friends, relatives and members of the public for financial assistance to enable her to bring her husband’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.
Offor made the appeal through a GoFundMe campaign, where she described her late husband as a gentle and devoted family man who was excited about raising their first child.
She said Nwokorie’s death had left her facing the difficult task of caring for their young child while also making arrangements for his final rites.
“He was a kind, gentle soul, a devoted partner, and so proud to be a father,” she stated.
According to the widow, their six-month-old child was deeply loved by the deceased, who had been looking forward to building a family with her.
Offor said her immediate concern was to have her husband’s remains repatriated to Nigeria so that he could be buried among his relatives and loved ones.
She explained that the expenses involved in transporting the body and organising the funeral had become overwhelming, making public assistance necessary.
“My greatest wish is to bring him home for his final farewell, so he can rest peacefully among his family and loved ones,” she said.
The widow appealed for donations of any amount, saying the funds would go towards repatriating the remains, funeral arrangements and supporting their six-month-old child.
“Every gift and prayer means the world to us,” she added.
As of Tuesday, the fundraising campaign had received £9,656 out of its £16,000 target.
The development has renewed attention to the challenges families of Nigerians who die abroad often face in repatriating their remains and organising burial ceremonies in Nigeria.
