A suspected armed robbery attack in the Igando area of Lagos State has left a yet-to-be-identified graduate of Lagos State University battling for his life after he was hit by a stray bullet.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday on Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area, where gunmen allegedly trailed a Point of Sale operator to her residence in an attempt to rob her.
Eyewitnesses said the four-man gang arrived on two motorcycles and initially headed for the PoS operator's shop, located close to her residence. However, after discovering she was not there, the suspects reportedly moved to the house and attempted to force their way inside.
A resident, who identified himself simply as Bode, said the occupants quickly locked the entrance, preventing the gunmen from gaining access.
According to him, the failed attempt infuriated the attackers, who opened fire indiscriminately.
"They came on two motorcycles and were about four in number. They had traced the PoS operator to her house. When they could not find her at the shop, they went straight to the house and started calling for her while trying to enter the building. The occupants immediately locked the door, and when they could not gain access, they began shooting," he said.
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said the victim was walking along the street when one of the bullets struck him.
"He unknowingly walked into the area before realising what was happening. It was at that moment that the robbers started shooting after failing to locate their target. After they fled, residents rushed him to a nearby General Hospital. We later learnt he had just graduated from LASU and was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps," the source added.
A police source disclosed that officers were immediately deployed to the scene after the incident was reported and recovered spent bullet shells in front of the building.
"The report was promptly attended to by our men, who visited the scene and recovered some spent bullet shells. Investigation into the attack is ongoing," the source said.
When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she had yet to receive details of the incident but promised to verify the report.
"The report has not gotten to me. I'll check and revert," she said.
As of the time of filing this report, the police spokesperson had yet to provide further updates on the incident.
