A nine-year-old Nigerian girl, Charlotte Muritala, is drawing attention for using social media to teach mathematics to other children, turning her passion for numbers into an online learning platform.
Charlotte, a Junior Secondary School 2 student from Offa, Kwara State, developed an interest in mathematics at a young age and has continued to nurture the passion by solving problems and explaining mathematical concepts to other children.
Her growing online presence has taken her beyond the conventional classroom, with her mother creating a social media platform where the young mathematics enthusiast can share lessons and interact with children who want to improve their understanding of the subject.
Charlotte, who recently spoke about her passion in an interview with Channels Television, said she had always found mathematics enjoyable because of her fascination with numbers.
“I started liking mathematics since when I was small. I love mathematics because I enjoy numbers,” she said.
Rather than being discouraged by difficult questions, the young learner said she sees challenging mathematical problems as an opportunity to test her ability and find solutions.
“Mathematics is fun for me. Some questions are hard, but I like solving them,” Charlotte explained.
She disclosed that her approach to difficult questions was to break them into smaller stages before attempting to solve them, making complex problems easier to understand.
“First, I like breaking them into small part. That makes it easier for me,” she said, adding that she would try another method if her initial approach failed.
The youngster's mother has played a key role in taking her talent beyond the school environment by providing a platform through which she can teach and reach a wider audience.
Charlotte said the opportunity had made her happy and proud, particularly because it allowed her to share what she knew with other children.
Her mathematics teacher has also recognised her unusual ability, describing her as a brilliant student with exceptional skills in the subject.
The teacher said Charlotte's enthusiasm for mathematics and her willingness to tackle difficult problems set her apart from many of her peers.
With her classroom knowledge now reaching children online, Charlotte is gradually emerging as a young advocate for mathematics and demonstrating how social media can also be used as a tool for learning.
