A worker at an eatery in Otefe, Oghara, Delta State, has been shot dead by suspected cultists while returning home from work.
The victim, identified as Jeffrey, was attacked alongside his colleague, Daniel, on Saturday night as they travelled on a motorcycle in the Oghara area.
Jeffrey sustained gunshot injuries and later died, while Daniel survived the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment.
A police source confirmed the incident, saying efforts to save Jeffrey failed after he was brought in for medical attention. His remains have since been deposited at a morgue.
“We received a report that a young man named Jeffrey was killed while heading home from work alongside his friend in Oghara. His friend was also injured in the process,” the source said.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, said the two victims worked at the same eatery and were attacked between 10pm and 11pm while riding home from work.
The platform identified Daniel as a recent graduate of Delta State Polytechnic and said he was receiving treatment at a hospital outside the immediate area because some nearby hospitals were reportedly on strike.
It added that the two men lived in apartments located close to each other.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comment, as calls to his telephone were unanswered. A message sent to him had also not received a response as of the time of filing the report.
