Two teenagers have drowned in a river in Askplaye community, Kaduna State, following days of heavy rainfall that triggered flooding in several parts of the state.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Suleiman Yakubu and 17-year-old Abubakar Mohammed.

The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident through its North-West Operations Office in Kaduna, although the circumstances surrounding the drowning remained unclear.

NEMA said the bodies of the teenagers had not been recovered as of the time of its latest assessment.

The agency disclosed that it had been working with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency and other emergency responders to assess the impact of the flooding caused by the prolonged rainfall.

According to NEMA, the downpour continued for about four consecutive days, from Thursday to Monday, affecting parts of Kaduna metropolis and surrounding communities.

Its Head of Operations, Hajia Halima Suleiman, led officials on an inspection of communities affected by the floodwaters to determine the extent of the damage and the assistance required.

NEMA said flash floods were recorded in some areas, resulting in submerged roads and leaving some residents temporarily stranded inside their homes.

The agency added that the flooding disrupted transportation and other movements, forcing residents to exercise caution while passing through affected locations.

During the assessment, Suleiman visited the family of Yakubu to sympathise with them over his death and provide support.

NEMA said its officials, KADSEMA and other relevant emergency agencies would continue to monitor the situation and evaluate the needs of communities affected by the flooding.

The agency said the ongoing assessment would help authorities determine and implement an appropriate response to the situation.
