JUST IN: Ondo govt pays tertiary institutions’ subvention arrears, seeks strike suspension

The Ondo State Government has released the outstanding balance of the August subvention to the four state-owned tertiary institutions in the state as part of measures to address their financial challenges.

The payment was made on Thursday as the government commenced the implementation of its decision to raise the monthly subvention to the institutions by 60 per cent.

The enhanced funding, according to the government, is intended to strengthen the institutions’ ability to meet their salary commitments and improve the welfare of their workers.

The development is expected to contribute to efforts to resolve the issues that led to the ongoing industrial action by unions in the affected institutions.

The state government consequently appealed to the striking workers to reconsider their position and return to their duties following the release of the funds.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa urged the unions to respond positively to the government’s intervention by ending the strike in the interest of students whose academic activities have been disrupted.

He also stressed the need to prioritise the continued development of the state and ensure that students return to their classrooms.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.
