A Kaduna man, Abubakar Lukman, has approached a Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling his former fiancée, Fatima Muhammad, to return items presented to her family during their marriage introduction.
Lukman told the court that the wedding preparations had been jointly handled by both families before he decided to cancel the marriage after allegedly discovering some habits in Muhammad which he said he could not accept in a wife.
He is asking the court to order the return of foodstuffs, an electric kettle, gas cylinder, floor rug, sweets, buckets and dates presented during the marriage introduction.
“Both our parents were involved in the preparations for the wedding. But I later discovered my wife to have some habits that I cannot condone in a wife. I decided to call off the wedding,” Lukman told the court.
However, counsel for Muhammad, Sani Sanusi, rejected the claim, arguing that the items in question had already been returned to the complainant.
The defence maintained that there was no outstanding property belonging to Lukman or his family in the defendant’s possession.
The presiding judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, directed Lukman to produce witnesses or other evidence to establish that the items were not returned as claimed by the defence.
The court subsequently adjourned the case until September 25 for further hearing.
