A woman, identified as Shobowale Balikis, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle ethanol disguised as bottled drinking water into the Ibara Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Balikis was intercepted by correctional officers at about 3:50pm on Saturday during a routine security check at the facility.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Odukoya Olayinka, confirmed the incident, saying the officers detected the concealed substance before it could get to the inmate for whom it was allegedly intended.
According to him, the suspect had packaged the ethanol in a bottled-water pack in an attempt to make the prohibited substance appear like ordinary drinking water.
Olayinka said the discovery followed the vigilance of officers conducting searches at the custodial centre, adding that the substance was seized immediately.
He disclosed that Balikis had been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, reaffirmed the correctional service's zero-tolerance policy towards the introduction of prohibited items into custodial facilities.
Adesina said the interception underscored the command's determination to prevent contraband from entering the centre, maintain order and protect the integrity of the correctional system.
