The Cross River State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a yet-to-be-identified man after a female guest was found dead in a hotel room in Calabar South Local Government Area of the state.
The woman was discovered in Room 2 of the hotel on Clifford Street after the male guest who reportedly lodged with her had allegedly left without properly completing the hotel’s registration process.
The incident was reported to the police at about 8am on Tuesday by the hotel director, who arrived at the scene with the manager and receptionist on duty, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.
Eitokpah said preliminary investigation showed that the unidentified man checked into the room with the woman at about 8pm on September 7. He added that the man’s details were allegedly not properly documented by the hotel.
The police spokesman said the receptionist later noticed that the room door was open and entered, believing that the occupants had departed. He reportedly found the woman lying motionless on the bed.
“Investigators who visited the scene observed apparent marks of violence on the face and neck and documented the scene accordingly,” the PPRO said.
The woman’s remains were evacuated to the General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead and deposited at the mortuary. Some tablets found in her handbag were also recovered as exhibits, although police said there was no established link between them and her death.
Police have detained the receptionist for questioning while efforts continue to identify and locate the male guest. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, directed a thorough investigation and urged anyone with useful information to contact the nearest police station.
