Bandits kill 60-year-old woman, injure others harvesting groundnuts

Suspected bandits have killed a 60-year-old woman and left another farmer critically injured after attacking women harvesting groundnuts and soybeans in Gwom-Ajang, Foron District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims were working on their farmland at about 4pm on Saturday when the attackers struck, according to community sources.

The community leader, Bitrus Gyang, confirmed the incident, saying one of the women was killed while two others sustained injuries during the attack.

The National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, also confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, describing it as another disturbing invasion of the community by suspected bandits.

Mwantiri identified the deceased as Mrs Anthonia Sunday, 60, while one of the injured victims was named as Mrs Happiness Gwom, 30, who reportedly sustained life-threatening injuries.

He said Gwom had been rushed to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for medical attention following the attack on the women harvesting their farm produce.

The youth leader called on security agencies to track down those responsible for the killing and bring them to justice.

The attack adds to security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where violence against rural communities has continued to threaten residents’ safety and farming activities.
