Gunmen have demanded N50m ransom for the release of a primary schoolteacher, Amina Hussaini, abducted from her residence in Kuru community, Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Hussaini, who teaches at a Local Education Authority Primary School in the community, was reportedly seized on Tuesday while her husband was away on an official assignment in Lafia, the state capital.
Her sister, Suwaiba Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation on Thursday, expressing fears over the victim’s continued detention and the family’s inability to meet the kidnappers’ financial demand.
Abdullahi said the abductors contacted the family after taking her sister away and insisted on N50m before she could regain her freedom.
She disclosed that efforts by a relative to negotiate a reduction in the ransom ended abruptly after the kidnappers terminated the telephone conversation.
The development, she said, had left the family distressed, as relatives struggled to find a way of raising the amount demanded for the teacher’s release.
Abdullahi added that the matter had been reported to the police, while the family was appealing to members of the public for financial and other forms of assistance.
She called on security agencies, the Nasarawa State Government and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene urgently to ensure her sister’s safe and unconditional release.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, SP Ramhan Nansel, said he had come across reports of the incident on social media and would make enquiries before providing further details.
