The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two men allegedly linked to an armed robbery gang operating in Akure and recovered a locally manufactured revolver and other items suspected to have been used for criminal activities.
The suspects, identified as 35-year-old Isreal Abakah and 37-year-old Gbene Emmanuel, were arrested at separate locations in Akure on September 27 by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit following intelligence received by the command.
The police said the operation continued with a search of the gang’s alleged hideout in the Olufoam area of the state capital, where the operatives discovered a locally made revolver capable of containing four rounds of ammunition.
Other items recovered from the hideout, according to the command, included suspected criminal charms, a laptop computer, motorcycle mirrors and a number plate.
The command said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects were members of a syndicate allegedly involved in robbery operations across Akure and its environs, adding that they had reportedly confessed to participating in some of the incidents.
It said investigators were examining the suspects’ alleged confessions and the recovered exhibits to determine their involvement in other robbery cases and identify additional members of the gang.
The police added that efforts were underway to arrest other suspected members still at large and trace communities or individuals who may have been affected by the gang’s alleged activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, commended the operatives for the arrests and urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities, assuring that the command would continue intelligence-driven operations to protect lives and property.
