Elizade University, at its 8th and 9th combined convocation ceremony, honored the academic achievements of its graduates, with a total of 484 Bachelor’s degree recipients and 74 postgraduate degree recipients, including its first-ever doctoral graduates.
The event was marked by an address from the university's Founder and Visitor, Chief Michael Ade Ojo, who shared his satisfaction with the institution’s growth, despite not gaining financially from his investment. Chief Ojo stated:
"Though I have not received any financial returns, seeing young Nigerians emerge fully prepared to make global impacts is a sufficient reward. My vision has always been to provide world-class education in Nigeria. It brings me joy to witness the progress we’ve made so far.”
Chief Ojo also commended Apostle Folorunso Alakija and Chief Tunde Afolabi, who were awarded honorary doctorate degrees for their significant contributions to Nigeria and the global community.
He announced the completion of new facilities, including a 1,500-bed male residence hall and a modern cafeteria, aimed at accommodating the university’s expanding student population.
Chief Ojo called on the government to support private universities like Elizade, which are striving to bridge the gaps in Nigeria’s education sector. He emphasized the need for enhanced focus on research and entrepreneurship training to equip graduates for national development.
The convocation lecture was delivered by former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, titled "Nigeria and I: What Can I Do?". Fashola made a passionate appeal to Nigerian youths, urging them to resist the growing trend of emigration, popularly referred to as the ‘Japa’ syndrome.
"Why did Mrs. Alakija stay? Why did Chief Afolabi remain? Times were tough even in their youth," Fashola remarked. He drew on historical context, referencing the challenges faced by past generations, including Chief Ade Ojo during his time at the University of Nigeria (UNN).
"If Chief Ojo had left, there would be no Elizade University today. Leaders do not run away when faced with adversity," Fashola said, encouraging young Nigerians to stay and help address the nation’s challenges.
The university celebrated its top graduates, including Imogu Emmanuella Ifunanya (CGPA 4.95) and Adeeye Funmilayo Comfort (CGPA 4.92), who have already begun further studies at prestigious institutions like Stafford University.
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Thadius Ijadunola highlighted the university’s rapid growth and the introduction of new postgraduate programs in Law, Civil Engineering, and Architecture.
He reaffirmed Elizade University's commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically skilled but also morally and entrepreneurially prepared.
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Emeritus Professor Olufemi Bamiro, noted the university's impressive expansion since its establishment in 2012. From an initial two faculties and 13 programs, Elizade University now offers 31 undergraduate and 23 postgraduate programs, ranking among the top 26 universities in Nigeria.
He also announced the construction of a ₦4.7 billion Hall of Residence and plans for a 2,500-capacity auditorium to support the university's continued growth.
Professor Bamiro advised the graduates to embrace the evolving job market and cultivate a mindset of resilience and adaptability.
"The era of relying solely on white-collar jobs is over," he said. "Your success will hinge on your ability to create opportunities and think entrepreneurially."
This memorable convocation highlighted Elizade University's dedication to academic excellence, community development, and preparing its students to thrive in an ever-changing global landscape.
