Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is expected to unveil the proposed University of Maritime Transport and Logistics in Ugbonla, Ilaje Local Government Area, in February 2027, as the state government intensifies efforts to develop the oil-producing communities.
The Executive Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, Prince Biyi Poroye, disclosed this during an inspection of facilities at the institution on Tuesday, expressing optimism that its elevation to university status would boost education, employment and economic activities across the commission’s mandate areas.
Poroye, who was accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, said the commission was working to provide the necessary infrastructure to support the proposed university and establish Ugbonla as a major centre for maritime education and logistics training.
He said the proposed institution would offer specialised programmes in maritime security and safety, maritime economics and finance, blue economy, transport and logistics management, climate change and ocean studies, maritime environmental management, shipping and maritime business, as well as port management and operations.
As part of preparations for the proposed transition, Poroye said OSOPADEC was working towards completing 200-bed male and female hostels to provide adequate accommodation for students ahead of the institution’s take-off.
He added that a semi-stadium was also being developed to promote sporting activities, recreation and talent development among students.
The OSOPADEC chairman further disclosed that the commission’s development plan included the Omuro International Market in Ugbonla, which is expected to stimulate trade, create jobs and provide business opportunities for residents and traders in neighbouring communities.
He said the market would complement the university by supporting the commercial needs of students, staff and other residents.
Poroye also revealed plans to establish a Nigerian Navy operating base close to the proposed university to strengthen security around the institution and its host communities.
According to him, the initiative is intended to provide a safer environment for academic activities, businesses and investments, particularly given the strategic importance of the coastal area.
He added that a medical centre had been constructed to provide healthcare services to students, staff and residents, with plans for OSOPADEC to manage the facility in collaboration with the Ugboland Host Communities Development Trust.
Poroye commended Aiyedatiwa for his commitment to developing the oil-producing areas, saying the commission would continue to implement projects designed to improve living conditions and expand opportunities for the people.
