The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the outcome of the planned 2025 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Justice James Omotosho gave the ruling on Friday while delivering judgment in a case challenging the validity of the proposed convention.
He ruled that the opposition party failed to adhere to the legal procedures required for holding such a convention, describing the move as contrary to the law.
The judge stated that materials presented before the court, including submissions from INEC and other respondents, confirmed that congresses were not held in several states, which violated the party’s internal rules and electoral laws.
Justice Omotosho also faulted the signing of party documents by the PDP National Chairman without the National Secretary, saying such actions rendered those documents invalid.
He further held that the party did not issue the mandatory 21-day notice to INEC to enable the commission monitor its congresses, as provided by law.
The court, therefore, restrained INEC from accepting, publishing, or recognising any result from the convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan until the PDP complies with all legal requirements.
