The Sea Empowerment Research Centre (SEREC) has recorded another milestone in its drive to advance ocean governance and sustainability, following its admission as an official member of Ocean Centres Ghana.
The recognition, according to a statement from the organisation, underscores SEREC’s consistent advocacy for transparency, research-based evaluation, and sustainable practices in the maritime industry. Through this partnership, the centre is expected to contribute to shaping safer and more resilient ocean economies across Africa.
Ocean Centres Ghana, established through a collaboration between the UN Global Compact and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, serves as a multi-stakeholder platform focused on four key action areas: Shipping & Ports, Fishing & Aquaculture, Offshore Renewables, and Finance & Investment.
The membership offers SEREC opportunities to influence high-level policy discussions, participate in targeted workshops, and collaborate with international peers in co-developing innovative projects tailored to local and sectoral priorities.
In a letter confirming the membership, Nana Kwabena Boakye-Boampong, Country Lead of Ocean Centres Ghana, expressed delight at SEREC’s enrolment.
The letter reads:

With a strong record of research excellence and policy advocacy, SEREC has been instrumental in promoting transparency and accountability in the maritime sector. Its new membership positions it to play a more active role in the co-creation of safety and sustainability solutions for ocean industries.
As part of the collaboration, SEREC will participate in a series of hybrid and online workshops to share insights, case studies, and best practices that can help address critical challenges in the maritime space.
The development, observers say, aligns SEREC with global sustainability efforts and further strengthens its role as a key player in driving inclusive and responsible ocean governance.
