The Agbekoya Society of Nigeria has warned gunmen operating in the South-West that it may take decisive action following the killing of three farmers in Igboho, Orelope Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The group reacted to the incident in a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan by its Secretary General, Adegbenro Ogunlana, and signed by its President General, Kamorudeen Okikiola.
Agbekoya expressed shock over the killings, saying it could no longer remain silent amid repeated attacks on farmers across the region.
The victims were earlier identified by Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, as Aderoju Mukaila, Olawuwo Saka and Ojeniyi Ojebayo, all killed in Igboho.
Igboho had also urged the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu to urgently address what he described as worsening insecurity in rural communities in Oyo State and the wider South-West.
“We urge the authorities to take urgent measures to protect farmers and ensure their safety. Failure to do so will be met with severe consequences, and Agbekoya will not hesitate to take necessary action to defend its members and communities.
“We condemn this heinous act of violence and demand immediate action from the Oyo State and Federal Governments to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The senseless killing of these innocent farmers is unacceptable and highlights the escalating insecurity in our communities,” the statement said.
The group also called for a thorough investigation into the incident, prosecution of those responsible, improved security for farming communities and support for the families of the slain farmers.
