A four-man armed gang on Friday terrorised Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, firing multiple shots as they dispossessed an unsuspecting victim of several millions of naira.
The attack took place along Muritala Muhammed Way, directly opposite the Vanguard Newspaper office.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who were masked, arrived in an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with a faded number plate. One witness, who requested anonymity, said the gang appeared to have trailed their target before striking.
According to him, the robbers opened fire on the victim’s grey Toyota Sienna, marked AA 693 GT, bursting its two left tyres and forcing the driver to halt.
He said three masked men immediately stepped out of the Corolla, while a fourth remained in the driver’s seat, prepared for a swift escape.
The attackers were said to have fired repeatedly into the air to disperse onlookers, prompting residents and passers-by to scamper for safety. Stray bullets reportedly struck the Sienna driver in the arm and shattered both the front and rear windshields, along with other parts of the vehicle.
“They packed the cartons full of money from the Toyota Sienna into their Corolla before speeding off,” an eyewitness said.
Another onlooker faulted the absence of security operatives, noting that no police officers were seen at the location throughout the incident.
It was further gathered that Elder Stephen Oni, the Kwara State correspondent for The New Telegraph, sustained injuries while attempting to flee from the gunshots.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered.
