Armed assailants on Wednesday night invaded Ipele in Ondo State, torching the Divisional Police Headquarters during a coordinated attack on the community.
The Ondo State Police Command, through its spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the incident occurred on December 31, 2025, and was strongly condemned by the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal.
The command debunked claims circulating on social media that a church was targeted, insisting that no place of worship was attacked during the operation.
Police accounts indicated that about 20 to 30 gunmen arrived at the station around 9:41pm, shooting sporadically and using explosives that set the facility on fire and destroyed several exhibits.
Despite the scale of the attack, the police said no casualty had been recorded as of the time the report was issued.
It added that a joint security team involving the police, military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps was mobilised to the area, but the attackers had fled before their arrival.
Following the incident, additional tactical teams, including EOD-CBRN operatives and mobile police personnel, were deployed to the area as security agencies launched a manhunt for those responsible.
