A pregnant woman identified as Aisha Najamu has died at the Turai Umaru Musa YarAdua Maternity and Children Hospital in Katsina State after a health worker allegedly refused to accept a bank transfer for oxygen, insisting that only cash was allowed.
The incident occurred on Monday after the woman was rushed to the facility in a critical state and needed immediate oxygen support.
Channels Television reported on Friday that an eyewitness claimed the cashier refused to issue a receipt or process the payment because she did not have cash, citing a hospital rule that bars transfers.
A man who attempted to intervene was said to have begged the cashier to take a transfer so the woman could be stabilised, but the staff member insisted that the hospital directive must be followed.
The witness further narrated that he offered to pay an additional amount and even presented a 100 dollar note out of sympathy, yet the cashier rejected it. He said the woman cried desperately for help until she died around 11.30 p.m.
Hospital officials told reporters that they had not received an official complaint from the public regarding the matter.
Cashier Aminu Kofar Bai, who represented the management, extended condolences to the family and promised that any staff involved in negligence would be investigated.
The hospital also defended its payment procedure, saying Katsina State Government TSA guidelines forbid transfers into personal accounts and that the facility has no POS machines, making cash the only acceptable payment option.
