A viral clip shared on X by user Somto Okonkwo has triggered fresh concern about the rising cases of stress-related deaths among Nigerian men living in the United Kingdom.
In the video, an unidentified woman lamented the pressure many men face abroad, accusing some of taking on the entire burden of running their homes even when their partners earn similar or higher incomes.
She faulted men who insist on being “man of the house” while carrying overwhelming financial responsibilities.
“For this UK, responsibility, don’t find so many responsible men in this country… You the answer husband of the house,” she said, noting that she had encountered multiple stroke cases involving men in their 40s at her workplace, which she linked to severe stress.
Her comments drew a swift response from Benjamin Kuti, widely known as Oluomo of Derby and founder of the Nigerians in UK Community (NIUKCommunity).
Kuti wrote under the post that the pattern of deaths among Nigerian men in the UK was becoming too frequent to overlook.
“I’m not sure how widespread this is, but it’s becoming impossible to ignore: we have a serious issue with the rising number of Nigerian men dying here in the UK. Just last month, we buried two of our brothers,” he said.
He argued that the cultural expectations placed on men in Nigeria do not translate to life in the UK, stressing that survival abroad requires shared responsibility between partners.
He urged men to prioritise their wellbeing, warning that carrying every burden alone is dangerous.
