Stakeholders from Ebu community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State have called for the chairmanship position of the council to be ceded to the community ahead of the 2027 local government elections.
The demand was made by the Ebu Sons and Daughters Forum in a statement issued on Sunday in Asaba by its spokesperson, Mr Collins Chetuni.
The group said Ebu had suffered prolonged political exclusion since the return of democracy in 1999, noting that no indigene of the community had emerged as a commissioner, local government chairman or member of the Delta State House of Assembly representing Oshimili North.
According to the forum, repeated assurances by past political leaders to address the imbalance had yielded no result, leaving the community perpetually sidelined in key leadership positions.
The stakeholders insisted that the alleged marginalisation must end, stressing that Ebu has qualified and competent sons and daughters capable of providing effective leadership at the council level.
They warned that the community would no longer tolerate being mobilised only during elections and ignored afterwards, adding that future political support would be based on genuine commitment to Ebu’s interests.
While commending the incumbent chairman of Oshimili North LGA, Mr Esewezie Innocent, for executing projects in Ebu, including the construction of market stalls, the forum said his performance showed readiness to serve all communities fairly.
The group appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to use the forthcoming local government polls to correct what it described as long-standing political injustice by supporting an Ebu indigene to contest and win the chairmanship seat.
Chetuni emphasised that the chairmanship position operates on a rotational basis, arguing that it was Ebu’s turn to produce the next council chairman.
The forum also urged political parties and stakeholders in Oshimili North to rally behind the community’s demand, while calling on Ebu indigenes at home and in the diaspora to unite in pursuit of the 2027 chairmanship bid.
